Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
