The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the top spot in the closing stages of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the title advantage from his teammate by just one point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, topped the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the leading McLaren during the running before the sprint shootout set to begin at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the points battle, sitting with a 36-point deficit Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team ran a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to have an incident, if briefly, when he rotated at the fourth corner during the early running. Tsunoda spun out over the track edges before rotating through the gravel trap, and was blessed to get away with just a minor contact of the wall. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the conclusion of the session, rotating twice through the fast downhill corner before the last turn on to the main straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th place, one place behind teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with the German's car in third, over half a second off the Australian's time. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
