In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of major explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
This event occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major developments preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
