The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
